Dress Code
DRESS AND GROOMING (All Grade Levels)
The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:
1. Wear shoes at all times; specifically prohibited footwear includes cleats, skate shoes or any shoes with wheels, or footwear not intended for outdoor wear.
2. Not wear hats, caps, sweat bands, visors, head coverings or bandannas in the building (neither males nor females).
3. Campus administrators may allow hair color that extends beyond natural tones as long as the hair color does not cause a disruption or interfere with normal school operations. The campus administrator will make this determination.
4. Not wear sunshades in the building or classrooms.
5. Not wear any clothing and/or jewelry that advertises or depicts tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or lewd, offensive, vulgar, obscene or violent writing or images.
6. Pierced/clipped jewelry is restricted to the ears only. Campus administrators may allow other piercings but only with clear plastic “spacers” or inserts.
7. Not wear any see-through styles or revealing fashions including bare midriffs, bare shoulders, backless fashions, spandex, tight fitting clothing, sleep wear, muscle shirts, tank tops, halter tops, miniskirts, or underwear garments that are worn as outerwear.
8. Not wear any dress, skirt, slit skirt or dress, slacks, jeans, pants, shorts or un-hemmed attire when measured with the student standing is more than three inches from the top of the kneecap. The top of the slit in a skirt, dress, or shorts, as well as any tears or rips in slacks, pants, jeans, or overalls must be no higher than three inches from the top of the kneecap when the student is standing.
9. Not wear pants lower than they were intended to be worn. “Sagging” is not allowed.
10. Not wear baggy or oversized pants (one size larger than actual measurements is allowed for growth). Examples include the pant leg bottom or hem being larger than the shoe, the crotch of pant sagging significantly below normal wear, pants having 12” or deeper rear pockets, and pants where the size is beyond the “one size larger” provision around the waist.
11. Apparel, accessories, hair color or hair styles that denote gang-related association is prohibited.
Contact your child’s campus for specific information on the approved attire. If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
