Reading Promotion

Each year, 20 books are chosen for the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List. Schools and libraries around the state participate in the program, encouraging students to read a minimum of five books from the list. In January, students vote for their favorite title. The author of the book receiving the most votes wins the Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) which is presented at the Texas Bluebonnet Award presentation held during the TLA Annual Conference in the spring. This is an opportunity to meet other families, enjoy some sweet treats, and learn more about the exciting things we have going on in our library and school that revolve around literacy. Our theme is normally "Spooktacular Literacy Night" and students are encouraged to wear their favorite book character costumes while they come participate in some fun activities like the book walk, bingo, meet and greet authors, sign up for a public library card and much more!

Bookfairs are held the first week of December and the first or second week of May. In the fall it is often paired with our Holly Jolly night, where families are invited to come and watch their students perform Christmas carols. In the spring, it is paired with Grandparents week when all students are invited to have their special adult come and eat lunch with them and shop, the fair. Both events are so fun and the students look forward to them. 

Since 1967, ILD celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society. This year's day will be celebrated worldwide under the them, Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces and will be an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all. 

Project Literacy is a collaborative initiative that promotes literacy and a life-long love of reading. Every year, each first-grade student receives a book to keep, and each campus library receives copies of the selected books to circulate among their students. This project would not be possible without the dedicated support from Wells Fargo, Midland County Public Library Foundation and Libraries, Midland ISD, Midland Reporter-Telegram, and Basin PBS.
